About the book >.>.> When we were discussing the possibility of organizing an outdoor sculpture exhibition in the grounds of Powis Castle several factors guided our thoughts. One was that there was already a wealth of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century garden sculpture including leaded figures at Powis and that we would therefore be working within a tradition of outdoor and more specifically garden sculpture. The second was that the Castle itself stands on the quarry from which the red sandstone which gives it its Welsh name Castell Coch was taken. Stone carving was the obvious subject matter for the exhibition. The revival of interest in traditional materials such as stone and bronze has emerged in sculpture over the past fifteen years. Naturally many sculptors have been carvers all their lives but young sculptors are now using this strong material. This passion for stone is being echoed in post-modernist architecture where there is a return to the use of natural materials. Many of the artists taking part in the STONEWORKS exhibition at Powis Castle have been involved in public commissions and we hope that this exhibition will further contribute towards the increase of sculpture commission in the environment.
