About the book >.>.> I had not thought a great deal about Britain prior to my arrival here in October 1963. I was aware of course that the Tories had been in power for over a decade and that the postwar economic boom had generated full employment and rising living standards coupled with a strong welfare state. The Tory message to the predominantly working-class electorate of the fifties was expressed in the catchy slogan ‘You’ve never had it so good’. This was certainly true except for the fact that those who coined the phrase had always been much better off than those whose votes they needed to stay in power. A series of sex-scandals connected to men in high places had damaged the Tory Party but not beyond repair. The Profumo affair had curiously enough become a cause c?l?bre in our part of the world as well. The reasons in this case were purely nationalistic. It had been widely reported that Field Marshal Ayub Khan had shared a swimming pool with Christine Keeler. Both had been house guests at Cliveden and Keeler was reputed to have commented favourably on certain attributes of the Field Marshal. This event alas did not bring the dictator down. In fact if anything it enhanced his prestige at home. Was he not after all the equal of (some said better than) member of the British a Government. (SP)
