About the book >.>.> Subterranean Sappers is a book about a war fought within a war a struggle that took place deep underground. As the author studied the subject he became increasingly frustrated with just how little there was remaining of the underground fortifications which those brave men worked on ceaselessly to support the infantry fighting overhead. There is nothing to see today except a few old mine craters which dot the front line and a minimal number of tunnels open to the public. He was also disappointed with how few books were available on the subject and set about gathering as much information as he could about those special breed of men who served their country and fought underground. Their work under the surface of the battlefield was nothing short of an engineering masterpiece. They improvised and turned sodden waterlogged tunnels into a haven from hell for the soldier on the surface. Colour plans have been included of the many underground workings as they are an important reference to aid you to follow the growing evolution of tunnel and dugout construction. (SP)
