About the book >.>.> Informal conversations and correspondence among spiritual guides about issues related to those they accompany have been going on for centuries. As far as we can ascertain however what we think of today as the “formal” super- vision of spiritual directors is a relatively recent phenomenon. It has arisen within the past three to four decades as the desire for spiritual direction has grown in both Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions. The greater need for formal accompaniment of spiritual directors by competent supervisors has brought about more questions concerning the nature of supervision and the supervision relationship in a spiritual direction context. This book is one of few written on the supervision of spiritual directors during this significant time. In conceptualizing and editing this work it is our desire to honor those who have been engaged in the work of supervision and those who have written on the topic in recent decades. At the same time we want to expand and encourage further conversation about the supervision relationship and process. We asked a variety of people gifted in both supervision and dire to write about their general understanding of supervision and particular issues worthy of our common attention. We hope the book produces a chorus of voides that stirs the minds hearts and imaginations of those doing supervision. (LL)
