About the book >.>.> Why the title? ‘Sweatin’ it out’ or ‘Sweatin’ out the mission’ seems to have been a universally used expression favoured by ground crews to describe the time leading up to the return of aircraft to base after a mission. Those on the ground literally sweated it out waiting to see if their charge would return or had been lost. This book is not concerned with operational missions or bomber crews except where their sphere of operation overlaps that of ground personnel. Although limiting the subject matter to one facet of 8th Air Force operations – the bomb groups – much of the day-to- day ‘colour’ is as much applicable to other USAAF Groups based in Britain examples from which have been included for illustrative purposes where more appropriate examples are not available. Differences in operating procedures existed from station to station however the space available in this publication only permits for generic illustrations of operational activity. The same also applies to the use of some terminology such as 8th AF. The air force changed its organisation and structure during the war and although it wasn’t always titled thus. for the purposes of brevity and avoidance of confusion in general the title ‘8th AF’ shall be used. In much the same way although the terms ‘airfield’ or ‘aerodrome’ are used to describe an entity as a whole the text will be interspersed with the more commonly used American terms of ‘station’ ‘field’ or ‘camp’. All generally mean the same thing and will be used when referring to an airfield. (LL)
