About the book >.>.> Each of those invited to write in this book was asked to limit himself to that aspect of my brother which he personally knew best and to be candid critical and personal; quotations from letters were to be brief in view of the intended volume of letters. My function as Editor has been to correct the few misstatements of fact which I noticed and to exclude any matter which overlapped or seemed to me unilluminating. I have not suppressed or modified the opinions of the writers nor altered their style except in so far as I have cut down redundancies and made punctuation conform to custom. The resultant gallery of partial portraits should taken in conjunction give a fair all-round impression of the man they depict and as each one is to some extent a self-portrait of its author they may also serve to indicate what manner of persons were his friends. The contributors are I think adequately representative in spite of the absence of those who found they could not write because of literary inexperience overwork personal feeling or in the case of a foreign official government prohibition.
