As I sat anxiously awaiting the arrival of the man who was going o interview me Mr Sidney Tubb finishing shop manager I looked around and tried to imagine the now darkened canteen fully lit and bustling with work- ers some queuing some sat at the long tables eating and chatting. The whole atmosphere was so different from the small dingy shop where I was currently employed as a motorcycle mechanic working all hours with no proper super- vision for the princely sum of 26 shillings (?1.30) a week. I had worked there for almost a year when my father called in one day and was shocked to see the working conditions. The workshop’ was a cobbled floor building with no toilets or washing facilities of any kind. That meant no handwashing from eight o’clock in the morning until six at night and then I cycled home the six-and-a-half miles in my overalls dirty hands and all! There was a quick turnover of fitters
