About the book >.>.> IT WILL WE HOPE be helpful to the reader if we list very briefly the principal alterations which we have made to Taste and the Antique since its appearance in 1981. Though misprints obvious errors and some misleading inferences have been corrected silently a few changes of substance have also been incorporated. These include our references to Caradosso in Chapter I and in no. 52 of the catalogue; to the identity and whereabouts of some of the casts made for Charles I and Philip IV in Chapter V and nos. 24 and 78 of the catalogue; to the availability of plaster casts and painted souvenirs of the antique in seventeenth-century France and eighteenth- century Italy in Chapter XI; to our misleading description of pastes in Chapter XII and to our (understressed) account of Barbedienne bronzes in Chapter XV. We have also amended our versions of Visconti’s response to the Apollo Belvedere (cat. no. 8) and of Winckelmann’s to the Niobe Group (cat. no. 66); given the whereabouts of Lawes-Wittewronge’s adaptation of the Farnese Bull (cat. no. 15); noted doubts about the authenticity of the Caracalla (cat. no. 18); added some unpublished material to our (still sadly incomplete) history of Count Fede’s Cupid and Psyche (cat. no. 26); and drawn attention to valuable articles (previously missed by us) on sixteenth-century attitudes towards the Meleager (cat. no. 60) the likely provenance of the Celestial Venus (cat. no. 85) and an early record of the Venus de Medici (cat. no. 88). Our index has been adjusted to take account of these changes and we have added a supplementary bibliography. (MP)
