About the book >.>.> It is indeed remarkable since the archives of the Second World War must have been pillaged ransacked burrowed into and turned over almost as thoroughly as Monte Cassino itself that no book has hitherto been written about one of the strangest units thrown up by that or any other conflict. The unit was called Ten Commando – and the shroud of secrecy which enveloped it at the time had hitherto scarcely begun to be unwrapped by the passing of the years. Why should it have been so hush-hush? Simply because Ten Commando was composed entirely of men who came from countries which were under Nazi occupation – men such as those who formed the Dutch French or Polish Troops of the Commando – or from Nazi Germany itself – the men who formed the mysterious X-Troop. So it is not difficult to see why the need for security was so great bearing in mind the colossal risks that were being taken. If an agent were infiltrated into Ten Commando he could do untold harm. If a member of the Commando were captured and his unit identified the rules of the Geneva Convention were unlikely to worry his captors unduly. So successfully was this overwhelming need for absolute secrecy drummed into the men of Ten Commando that until now practically nothing has been written about their activities – least of all by themselves. Ian Dear soon found that he had set himself a formidable task in trying to discover who they were and what they did – but the result is a remarkable book indeed and a worthy tribute to an incredibly brave body of men who certainly deserve their place very near the top of the Roll of Honour of the Second World War.
