But in my mind’s eye I can still see us wander- ing through the Baroque hall poring over the bibles the Carolingian waxed writing tablets the ancient volumes and their ornate covers studded with gold ivory and precious stones the Nibelung Manuscript the Parsifal Saga the Irish Psalter the Latin dictionaries the illuminated books of hours with their illustrations of insects and flowers… We wan- dered among the exhibits for hours as though in a dream. There were moments of silent contemplation in which we sensed the joy of being together. But it was the sight of the Egyptian mummy of an eighteen-year- old girl that made a lasting impression on me. She had such delicate features as well as beautiful teeth. A few strands of hair were still visible near the binding strip above the ear. Neither of us was much older than she had been and we couldn’t help feeling we had much in common with her despite the thousands of years separating us
