About the book >.>.> In 1914 when his friendliness charm good looks and original talk endeared him even to those who found his work incomprehensibly modern the jealous D. H. Lawrence described him as a black beetle. Never since then have I heard of anyone who disliked him. He remains delightful and modest also. Good critics singled out the youthful Grant as the most gifted of the artists here who had been influenced by the Paris Post Impressionists. Later when our other painters were growing less realistic he became more so swimming against the current to the vexation of most critics. Today he wins increasing applause from young painters who work in a contrasting tradition. Having admired him and his work for over fifty years I know that though a keen enjoyer he has never been distracted by alcohol smart society indolence the demands of dealers or the other temptations that have enfeebled so many of the most promising painters. Regardless of fashion he has always obeyed his own eyes and his own imagination. There are many reasons why the name of Duncan Grant tends to be more familiar than his work. The first and most important has to do with the availability and visibility of his best work. With the exceptions of Charleston the Sussex farmhouse in which he lived for more than half a century and the rooms that he decorated with Vanessa Bell for Maynard Keynes at King’s College Cambridge in the early 1920’s all of his early decorated interiors have perished mainly as the result of war damage. ‘Open air where we sat so many nights gave so many parties.
