About the book >.>.> This book is about the Racing Game. It is not about the sport of horses trainers owners and jockeys which is sometimes referred to as the racing game. It is about one facet of The Turf – Betting in particular Profes- sional Betting. Yet this definition may be misconstrued so we shall state right at the beginning that the betting that this book discusses has very little to do with the guidance of punters in their betting ventures. The book is about Layers Takers Bets and Prices. It is about that Game played by professionals who look to the racecourse for their livelihood. Over the last two centuries much has been written about the horse. There exists a wealth of literature which chronicles horse-breeding horse-racing horse-riding training and hunting in a most assiduous manner. The early writers on the horse used to acknowledge an hier- archy in matters equine – The Chase The Road and The Turf of which the last has attracted the greatest number of writers but in all the writing on the Turf one side of the subject has been neglected. The history of horse racing is about as complete as one could wish. The horses themselves have pedigrees going back to about 1660 when the thoroughbred made its appearance as the horse bred for racing. (SP)
