About the book >.>.> We however entertain the hope that in this present volume some new ground has been broken and that it will yield ore in sufficient paying quantities to reward both the student of the Old Masters of miniature painting and the modern aspirant to proficiency in the craft. We believe that it will be found to contain infor- mation concerning pigments that does not appear in other books save perhaps in the greater works of reference that are not always within the student’s reach and we have tried to supply certain special details such as are not usually contained in volumes of this sort. The book is divided into two portions for which each of the authors is individually responsible but as we have endeavoured to render each other assistance throughout we are enabled to assume to a certain extent responsibility for the whole. The pigments used by both classes of artists have been dealt with seriatim and some information supplied concerning their chemical composition the manner of their production or the places from which they are obtained; and their value to the miniature painter on the ground of permanence. We have striven to make it clear what colours the early masters employed in order that the practical miniature painter may. (SP)
