About the book >.>.> Californian Country House Style Arthingworth Rancho Santa Fe is an expression of the English country house tradition transported to California as unveiled by George Plumptre. The tradition of building a country house and deco- rating its interiors with specially collected works of art and its exteriors with newly created gardens is long established in many countries. But it would be fair to say that since the 18th century Englishmen have spread the tradition to more places than any other nation. The concept of house garden and art collection as a harmonious aesthetic entity particu- larly appeals to the English sensibility and its expres- sion has been realized in many surprising locations. It is this tradition that inspired the creation of Arthingworth in California. The house is named after the owner’s original seat in Northamptonshire acquired in marriage in 1683. Three centuries lateralmost to the year the new Arthingworth was to be something quite different a spectacular oasis in the arid semi-desert of southern California. (MP)
