About the book >.>.> Whilst undertaking research for this book I received considerable encouragement from the Clay Cross Company whose Director and Estate Agent Mr. R. F. Childs coped with my many requests and made available all A.L.R. books maps and documents that still survive at Clay Cross. Certain items have been lost or destroyed and apparent omissions in my story may well be due to the sketchy nature of the A.L.R. Minute Book. This results from the A.L.R. being considered as just another department by the Clay Cross Company which under- took the overall administration. Regrettably (although understandably) I have not had access to the latter’s Minute Book because of its non- A.L.R. private and confidential entries. I am grateful to Mr. M. Rhodes for his diligent search at the Ministry of Transport which produced several hitherto missing items. Dimensional information is not available for Muir-Hill petrol locomotive no. 106 as the builders’ pre-war records “were destroyed by enemy action” and despite extensive enquiries I have been able to discover little of the career of John May the first Secretary and Manager.
