About the book >.>.> This book is based on my Danish volumes Det Athenske Demokrati i 4. drh. f. Kr. I-VI (Copenhagen 1977-81) but I have completely rewritten reorganized and updated the work and changed it from a handbook (with discussions of problems and scores of source references in extremely long endnotes) into what I hope is a general and more accessible account. Thus the present book is primarily intended not for specialists but for students of classics history and political science as well as for anyone else who takes an interest in the history of ancient Greece and of demo- cracy. For the benefit of the non-specialist I have devoted much space and attention to description of the democratic institutions and to a narrative account of how the Athenian democracy worked. I have also attempted to analyse the principles and ideals behind the institutions but discussion of scholarly controversies has been eliminated. The result for better or worse presents my view of Athenian democracy. Since most readers will have no knowledge of Greek quotations are given in translation and Greek terms in italicized transcription. Also all technical terms are explained in the Glossary (pp. 348-70). The notes have been kept as short as possible and consist exclusively of references to the sources and to the modern literature. Again in each case I have restricted myself to one or two or at most three selected source references followed by selected references to modern accounts where a fuller presentation of the evidence and a more detailed discussion of the problems can be found. References to scholars whose views I do not share are introduced by pace or contra unless it is clear from the context that their views differ from mine. On the whole however I have preferred in the notes to refer directly to the sources rather than to modern treatments and in the text to discuss the evidence rather than opposing modern interpretations of it. Chapter 2 presents the evidence on which the book is based but this is an appropriate place to say something about the scope of the book and the method I have used. (SP)
