About the book >.>.> Thomas Jefferson’s design and furnishing of Monticello epitomized the new obsession with comfort as he sought to improve the heating ventila- tion illumination privacy and hygiene of conventional architecture. Accord ing to biographer Jack McLaughlin “his design style was to choose what was often an impractical but aesthetically satisfying architectural motif and then modify it to make the space as comfortable and livable as possible. For warmth Jefferson installed Count Rumford’s newly designed fireplaces and stoves and for insulation the north-facing tea room had triple-glazed windows and double sliding glass doors. His alcove bed had a papered scree that raised and lowered depending on his relative needs for ventilation of privacy (McLaughlin 1988: 36). Jefferson a man of infinite physical and mental energy was obsessed with improving the physical efficiency of fumiture. He shopped for tables and shairs that used rotating mechanisms to reduce the need to move about a room and he encouraged the furniture makers at Monticello to improve on these designs. (SP)
