About the book >.>.> Comprehensive or worthwhile solution was attempted until the cholera epidemic of 1848-9 which resulted in 14.601 deaths in London alone and exacerbated the interments problem almost to saturation point. Two main schemes both designed to relieve this intolerable pressure on the burying grounds evolved from this crisis of congestion. One was an unsuc- cessful Government hent enterprise which attempted to place the administration of all metropolitan burials under the supervision of a public burial board. Two ‘national’ cemeteries would be opened (one based on an enlarged Kensal Green Cemetery to be called the ‘Great Western Metropolitan Cemet- ery’ the other to be opened near Abbey Wood and called the ‘Great Eastern Metropolitan Cemetery’) and managed by this board and thenceforth all the overcrowded burying grounds would be closed and all interments channel- led into the two public cemeteries. This project failed to mature because of flaws in the Metropolitan Interments Act (1850) its dependence on a central monopoly for success the scepticism of the Treasury concerning its viabil- ity and the resentment engendered by its interference with private enter- prise. All this and the rise of the second scheme led the Government to reconsider the propriety of the measure in 1852. (LL)
