About the book >.>.> CHRISTIANE BRUSSELMANS influenced the lives of numerous people on a world-wide level with a vision of the sacraments which touched the deepest roots of their human experience. It was a uniting and integrating vision which integrated reflection on lived experience with the liturgical celebratory dimension and both of these within the hope of a renewed and revivified Church which listened and responded to the breath of the Spirit. It was uniting in the sense of uniting theology with its roots in prayer and contemplation and uniting liturgy with the active apostolate. This was no narrow ritualistic understanding of the sacraments but deeply theological in drawing on the sacramental vision of the early Church and deeply ecclesial in locating the sacramental heart in the local church community. It was a vision profoundly sensitive to culture – at home equally in Europe North or South America or the Caribbean. She was particularly sensitive to the Puerto Ricans in Harlem. But it was with children that it all began. As she herself told the story: her father was very concerned about the faith education of his (then) 46 grandchildren so simply told Christiane to study theology and take care of their religious education. Thus was Christiane a guitar player and poultry-keeper thrust into years of traditional theology at the University of Leuven Belgium and the Institut Catholique in Paris rich formative years for her when this integrating vision enabled her to make the needs of children in their family situation the touchstone of her theology. We create this book as educators influenced as so many others – by her life and vision. Rather than create a book of reminiscences of tributes to her achievements we – together with the other contributors – wished (LL)
