About the book >.>.> When the revised Code of Canon Law was promulgated in January 1983 a first reaction of the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland was to consider publishing for the assistance of those concerned a commentary on the canons of the new Code. However a more pressing need quickly pre- sented itself: that namely of making publicly available an official translation into the English language of the text of the Code itself. This was undertaken at once and its first edition was published (Collins London) in September 1983 some two months before the promulgated Code itself was to come into effect on 27 November of that year. In the twelve years intervening since then work on the present commentary and guide has been proceeding consistently. Expert contributors were invited to participate in the endeavour from Great Britain from Ireland and from Canada. This interval of years has not been without its distinct advantages: indeed it has provided the very positive benefit of enabling this Society to estimate the public reaction to the Code throughout the Church.
