About the book >.>.> The prehistoric pottery of Korea is a plain coarse ware reddish brown in colour the predominant shape being that of a pot with a straight neck and flat base. In addition there are two varieties which show outside influence the first being pottery with comb patterns (kamm keramik) and the second polished reddish pottery. The first of these is probably related to the Scandinavian comb-pattern pottery and the second to the painted pottery of China which has a range extending to South Manchuria. About the end of the prehistoric era a fresh wave of foreign influence mainly from China becomes evident: a new type of grey stoneware resulted and later developed into the Silla period pottery which was made in such abundance in South Korea. In the north the kingdom of Koguryo (c. 37 B.C.-A.D. 668) came under direct Chinese influence both from the Chinese colony of Lo-lang established in northern Korea and from China itself. Two kinds of pottery were produced – plain grey and glazed. Very little has survived however so that our knowledge of Koguryo pottery is scanty but it seems clear that the ware is akin to Han pottery and much softer than the grey pottery of South Korea. The pottery of the kingdom of Paekche (c. 18 B.C.-A.D. 663) in south-western Korea also came under the influence of the Chinese pottery of Lo-lang. It has been divided into three groups-grey or brownish earthenware glazed earthenware and grey stoneware. The first kind resembles Lo-lang pottery in appearance and quality; it is frequently ornamented with the so-called mat pattern. The second kind may also be related to Lo-lang pottery but some of the vessels exhibit influence from South China. The third group is similar in quality to Silla pottery but the shapes of the vessels are different. (MP)
