About the book >.>.> The persistence of the collect form in the Churches of the Reformation and in the Reformed tradition speaks of a continuing allegiance to one of the treasures of their common heritage. It also shows the resilience and vitality of a form of prayer which at its best has survived trans- lation revision and differences in theological approach to present the petitions of the assembly with grace dignity and restraint. That might be all that needed to be said were the collect in the Churches of the Reformation’ as innocuous a generic description as it sounded. But ‘collect’ ‘Churches’ and ‘Reformation’ are three nouns with large hinterlands. Which Churches of the Reformation are being considered and why? How did they approach the matter of the collect when they came to devise their own orders of worship? What is the distinctive claim of the collect as a linking device among church tra ditions? The present collection of essays is shaped by these questions and authors who are practitioners as well as liturgists explore them armed with the experience of leading worship serving on the liturgical decision-making bodies of their Churches writing new material and teaching liturgy. Three Reformation lineages identified with Luther Calvin and the English Reformers who drew on multiple influences as they engaged with their own volatile domestic scene have been taken into account. The Lutheran stream is represented by chapters on the Church of Sweden and the Evangelical Lutheran Churches in America and in Canada. The Calvinist stream is treated in a chapter on the Presbyterian Church (USA). A chapter on the Anglican collect examines the English stream. Their descendants in subsequent generations are represented by treat ments of the Methodist Church in Britain and on the other side of the Atlantic the United Methodist Church. Immediately things become less simple and this is not unrelated to the migratory tendencies of the collect. John Lampard describes how British Methodism grew out (LL)
