It is presented in the light of Francis I’s artistic and cultural patronage and placed in its political context as an expression of the king’s aristocratic ideology for the most important of the luxuriously decorated ch?teaux which enhanced his absolutist rule was Fontainebleau where his art col- lection was housed. This volume begins by introducing Francis I his art patronage and his collecting. Among the sub- jects treated are Francis I’s personal imagery por- traits of him and his artistic patronage in general particularly at Fontainebleau; the formation and sources of the King’s collection; and its installation at the ch?teau and later history. Then each work in the collection is discussed documented and illus trated in detail beginning with Italian paintings. next Italian and antique sculpture and finally Italian decorative arts.
