About the book >.>.> I have deliberately chosen not to include a great deal of material by William Hogarth. This is not to deny or belittle Hogarth’s importance: he was undoubtedly the most significant English graphic artist of the first half of the eighteenth century and he accordingly occupies a central place in the introductory discussion. But Hogarth’s work including the famous series of prints – Marriage a la Mode The Rake’s and Harlot’s Progress – is sufficiently familiar for me to have felt entitled to assume that readers are acquainted with most of his prints. Moreover Hogarth’s work is so rich and so dense in allusion that it really requires separate and detailed treatment of the kind accorded the artist by Ronald Paulson both in his biography and catalogue raisonn? of Hogarth’s graphic works. I have incurred many debts in completing this work. Michael Duffy has been both an enthusiastic and patient editor. The staff of the Yale Center for British Art have helped me in many ways great and small and provided a stimulating visual environment to which only the most myopic historian could be insensitive. I have greatly benefited from discussions with Ron Paulson and also have to thank him for establishing the group of historians literary critics and art historians who meet periodically at the Yale Center.
