About the book >.>.> Twenty years after the structuralist movement it is not irrelevant conscientiously to examine mythology in general. First because we thought-and in good company-that new theoretical consideration of it would enable us to write a real grammar of mythological language after several years of unpublished applications of theory and formative principles. Second because a Greek scholar naively thinks that mythology the term and the thing stems more or less from his curiosity if not from his powers. For us myth is like a force of nature. In mythology everyone feels more or less at home without being restricted to choosing between fascinating or miraculous stories and ways of thinking that are not necessarily ours. To the reader of myths what difference does it make that in 1724 Father Lafitau decried their “carnal thoughts”? Why would he care about the opinion of a Jesuit reread- ing Plutarch among the Hurons unless those sublime and fabulous poetical works offered us so much charm. (LL)
