About the book >.>.> Peter Hamilton-Leggett’s bibliography is one of the largest ever published relating to Devon and has a similar number of references to Allan Brockett’s The Devon Union List (University of Exeter 1977) which covers the whole of the county. It is most appropriate for Devon County Council Library Services to be involved in this publication through its links with Devon Books. The library service has previously published Devon Topographical Prints 1660-1870: a catalogue and guide (1977) compiled by J V Somers Cocks who produced the previous bibliography of Dartmoor. It currently produces the annual Devon Bibliography and over the years has prepared a wide range of booklists on local topics. Through its network of local studies libraries the library service aims to collect catalogue and conserve for future researchers material relating to all aspects of Devon and its region and in its libraries are to be found the majority of the items listed in this volume. In a bibliography of this kind it is impractical to give locations as not all copies of the items listed were seen by the compiler. It is therefore appropriate here to give a brief guide to the main libraries in the county with collections of local studies material. Since 1974 Devon County Library Services have been responsible for public library local studies collections in all areas of the county. These are co-ordinated to provide a consistently exhaustive coverage of published material relating to Devon. (SP)
