About the book >.>.> ART HISTORY IS largely made up of detective stories. One still being writ- ten and literally involving crime is that of “Rodin Drawings True and False.” In this book and in the exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York we have assembled many of Rodin’s best drawings that have not been seen before or have been rarely reproduced; all of them however are shown for the first time in approximately chronological sequence. Our purpose has been to share our discovery of Rodin’s greatness as a draftsman and his astonishing range as an artist. Another purpose of the show and book was to involve scholars in a collaborative effort of mutual support rather than petty competition. We have also felt that a major public exhibition and an accompanying book drawing attention to Rodin’s drawings and exposing those who for years forged Rodin’s work were the appropriate and logical follow-up to Dorothy Seiberling’s expos? of the Durig fakes in the June 4 1965 issue of Life magazine. My own part in the Durig disclosures and my reaction to seeing fakes reproduced and sold in galleries and auction houses and hanging in museums and private collections all over the United States and Europe were personal motiva tions for the idea of the exhibition and book.
