About the book >.>.> This book is an exercise in historical theology. This theological approach takes what various groups of Christians have over the years believed and done alongside what they have formally theorized and written down as providing a basis for critical reflection. This in turn can form a background for asking more traditional theological questions such as what is the basic core of Christian understanding regarding the Eucharist as well as providing a starting point for discussions of Christian practice today such as whether or not there is a way out of inherited points of impasse between churches and whether or not looking back at our past can help us see alternative futures. So this book deliberately does not confine itself to the study of the past-in particular the earliest period – such as might be found in a study of Christian origins (whether that study is carried out under the banner of ‘NT studies’ ‘origins of the liturgy’ ‘early Christian studies’ or ‘patristics’) nor of the present such as might be found in a work of doctrinal theology or an attempt to form an ecumenical bridge between inherited bodies of doctrine. In all these areas there has been an amazing flowering of scholarship in the last 50 years and this book seeks to make links between these areas. But to draw attention to these links between areas of investigation it takes as its starting point the question of what Christians have done. (LL)
