Others were technically poor or visually dull and clich?d. Nearly all were compromised by the need to convey with great clarity details of garment construc- tion the number of buttons and the texture of the fabrics and the appropriate accessories at the expense of the atmosphere and vivacity of the figures they depicted. But as the purpose of these illustrations was to inform the public of fashions and how to wear them nothing more was expected of them.
