About the book >.>.> His work has been eagerly collected by Americans and it can be found in museums in New York Philadelphia Baltimore Chicago and other American cities. Yet despite excellent monographs in English by Klaus Berger and Jolin Rewald few of his admirers here seem to know more about the man than his name. It is true that neither these two authors nor Mellerio (who had known him personally and quite intimately) provide grist for a Hollywood movie like Last for Life or Moulin Rouge. Indeed this clairvoyant was one of the least erratic of the great French artists in the last century. He did not startle the habitu?s of a boulevard caf? by appearing like the etcher Charles M?ryon with a corn?ge of peacocks nor did he indulge in “lost weekends” as did so many of his colleagues. Gentle and conventionally dressed he did not outrage the bourgeois with his behavior as did Gauguin Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec. His work especially his mind-haunting and often macabre prinus might lead one to believe that their creator must have lived in a sort of delirium occupying himself with occultism and black magic. (SP)
