About the book >.>.> The Great County Adit was described in the Mining Journal of May 6 1843 as “the most extensive valuable and systematic undertaking of the kind in Cornwall perhaps in England and we believe but few in the world exceed it in importance.” Over eighty years later an article in the Western Morning News said of it: “The County Adit… is one of the most extensive in the kingdom a work of national importance …its construction is a monumental achievement of grit and perseverance.” The great drainage system became crucial to the continuing survival of some of the greatest copper mines in the world and without the mineral produce of those mines the British industrial revolu- tion would have struggled to maintain its momentum. Started in 1748 in the Carnon Valley the Adit was financed and directed by two of the most remarkable men in Cornish mining history William Lemon and John Williams. Within the first fifty years of its life the Adit had improved mine drainage in the largest copper producing district in the world. It was eventually to serve over sixty mines drain five parishes and extend for nearly forty miles.
