About the book >.>.> This Volume contains two books under one cover both essential tools for those collecting researching or trading in Great War Medals. The Chapter on the abbreviations found on Great War Medals and official documents represents 25 years continual work. Some abbreviations eluded me for years. The T.T.-prefix found on AVC Medals took seven years to crack. In the end I found it by accident in the ACIs when looking for something else! A number of entries are marked “speculative”. This indicates I have been unable to verify the interpretation from an official source but would be fairly certain it is correct. I hope this Chapter will become the standard reference for Great War Abbreviations. I estimate that the 7000 entries found on WW1 campaign medals represent around 98% of the total used by the engravers. Currently I am only finding a couple of new abbreviations each year (mostly Indian units and very rare British Units in recent years). The work was recognised by the OMRS in 2013 by the award of its prestigious Gold Medal. Should anyone find an abbreviation not listed I would be pleased to hear from them. Like the section on abbreviations the Chapter on Regimental Numbers began in 2004 with a blank sheet of paper. The first section I completed was the regimental numbers of the Royal Engineers. This study took me eighteen months. The complete work will appear in Volume III which offers more detailed information on the numbers. The initial study comprised endless tally sheets taken from every battalion and unit in Soldiers Died in the Great War then with the Corps especially. a study of 150000 plus entries in the MM and DCM Rolls which give the sub-units served with. At this point I met up with Paul Nixon who runs a blog on British Regimental Numbers from 1881 to 1918. A lot of Paul’s work is based on the study of attestation papers so this gave a new dimension to the study and added much new information to that already in place from the casualty and gallantry medal rolls. In all this Chapter has undergone thirteen major drafts. (MP)
