About the book >.>.> This is an uncomfortable book in that it deprives people of illness as an alibi for their unresolved problems. We propose to show that the patient is not the innocent victim of some quirk of nature but actually the author of his or her own sickness. Thus we shall not be addressing ourselves to environmental pollution the ills of civilisation unhealthy living or similar familiar scape- goats; instead we propose to bring the metaphysical aspect of illness to the fore. From this viewpoint symptoms are seen to be bodily expressions of psychological conflicts able through their symbolism to reveal the patient’s current problems. In the first part of this book we therefore present the theoretical presuppositions underlying this approach and ex- pound a philosophy of illness. We recommend strongly that this first part be read carefully and in detail – possibly more than once before turning to Part 2. This book could be described as a continuation or even elaboration of the previous book The Challenge of Fate (Coven- ture 1984) although we have taken pains to give this new book its own self-contained identity. Nevertheless we would recom- mend The Challenge of Fate as good preparatory or even com- plementary reading especially should the theoretical part of the present book pose any difficulties. In Part 2 the most common disease-symptoms are pre- sented in their symbolic aspects and interpreted as expressions of psychological problems. An index of individual symptoms at the end of the book will enable the reader to refer back to any given symptom as the need arises. Nevertheless it is our primary aim to use our explanations as a means of teaching readers a new way of seeing which will enable them to recognise the meanings of symptoms and develop their own interpretations for themselves. At the same time we have used the subject of illness as a hat-peg for a whole range of philosophical and esoteric themes whose application goes far beyond the narrow remit of mere illness. (LL)
