About the book >.>.> The Derbyshire General Infirmary was part of the great wave of 18th and early 19th century philanthropic civic building. Its design was innovative and unusual; crowning all a statue of Aesculapius the Greek God of Medicine proclaimed its role to the rapidly expanding city. Throughout its life the Infirmary had the wholehearted support and devoted service of some of Derbyshire’s greatest families: the list of governors published in each of its annual reports reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of 19th century Derbyshire society Yet despite two extensions the lifetime of this infirmary was little more than 80 years ending in total demolition. The story that Dr Leveaux unfolds tells of the beginning of the infirmary up until the final crisis that led to its demolition. Until now this important part of Derbyshire history has been com- pletely unrecorded in any published work. Michael Leveaux interprets the human story from thorough researches among the complete set of Minutes of the Governing Body held at the Derbyshire Record Office. He has also tracked down splendid contemporary illustrations including glass plate photographs and the rare meticulous engravings of the original design.
