About the book >.>.> This book had its origin in 1967 when a chance introduction brought together the authors’ investigations. One of us had been working on the collieries the other on transportation in the coalfield. Co-operation seemed desirable and this book is the result. We have investigated all the sites by verbal enquiry searching the written records and examination on the spot. In connection with the latter we may mention our excavations on tramroad routes. These were assisted by a mine detector which gave us worthwhile results and the local villagers an amusing and interesting spectacle! We have endeavoured to provide the reader with both an interesting and informative story and a means of interpreting the scattered remains of Somerset coal mining that he may find. We have accumulated far more information than can be encompassed in a commercial publication and we have there- fore tried to emphasise some of the interesting and lesser known aspects of the coalfield. Finally it is to be hoped that this work will in some measure be taken as a tribute to the colliers of Somerset; as a memorial-however brief-of their lives and activities re- corded before it is too late.
