About the book >.>.> The Incarnate Word explores the nature of verbal space in a succession of texts. While I consider space inherent to literary form I also use the term as a critical and perceptual tool. Pure spatiality is a condition toward which literature aspires but which it never achieves. The desire to overcome time competes with the temporal succession of words. Some critics argue that our understanding of metaphors in the first stanza of a poem must exclude relationships that occur later. But our first reading experience cannot be re- covered and it is colored by associations that the words acquired before the poem was written. When we reread a poem its meta- phors interact across the linear sequence of words-cach line occurs in the context of the entire poem. Often however we willingly and deliciously suspend our knowledge of what is to come; we revel in a mixture of anticipation and submission that is actually assisted by our familiarity with the entire text.
