About the book >.>.> The philosophy of Gottlob Frege (1848- 1925) is to be seen as the starting point for the entire modern analytical move- ment; Russell Wittgenstein and Quine were all profoundly influenced by Frege and almost all analytical philosophy can be viewed as building on or attempting to correct his work. Through Husserl he also had a significant influence on the phenomenological school. It is therefore essential for a true under- standing of modern philosophy to interpret Frege aright. In 1973 Michael Dummett published Frege: Philosophy of Language the first of two volumes devoted to a comprehensive survey and discussion of Frege’s philosophy con- sidered as roughly divisible between the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mathematics. In that volume of which a second edition has been issued he not only expounded those parts of Frege’s philosophy of which he treated but also gave an assessment of them often ranging far afield in order to do so. The present book interpolated between the first and second volumes of the main study does something different. Since 1973 many divergent interpretations of Frege’s philosophy have been advanced with the result that despite the clarity of Frege’s own writing someone abreast of the secondary literature may now find himself more uncertain of Frege’s meaning than at any previous time. Dummett believes that such uncertainty is unnecessary and harmful to the understanding of a great philosopher whose work is of crucial relevance to contemporary philosophy. Accordingly. (MP)
