About the book >.>.> My excuse for compiling this brief narrative in regard M to the invention of the automobile is twofold. We are now within a month or so of the fortieth anniversary of that epoch-making day when self-propelled vehicles were first permitted by law to use the roads of this country without a person having to walk in front carrying a red flag. The father of the British motor industry Mr. F. R. Simms to whom this book is affectionately dedicated is happily still with us but his co-partner and intimate friend Herr Gottlieb Daimler lived to see but little more than indica- tions that the task to which he had devoted so many years of his life might come to fruition. The ranks of those who participated in the memorable journey from London to Brighton in 1896 are rapidly thinning but with this process there has sprung up during the past few years an ever-increasingly keen interest on the part of the present generation of motorists in motor vehicles of a bygone age. The sponsors of this movement in England are the Veteran Car Club but both in France and in Germany there are kindred organizations while America is now waking up to the historical significance thereof. The annual run of veteran cars from London to Brighton organized by the R.A.C. in conjunction with the Veteran Car Club in commemoration of the “Emancipation” Act of 1896 has clearly captured the imagination of the public.
