About the book >.>.> Family Background – Although in my early years I had never given much thought to ever joining any of the armed forces many of my relatives had had their experiences. My father William before emigrating to Canada in 1910 had been a member of the Local Volunteers Regiment; mainly he said to be able to take part firing on the rifle range on the cliffs of Walls Hill Torquay. Here the targets were placed against a long limestone wall on the seaward side with the firing positions marked out every one hundred yards up to five hundred with blue tiles and white letters set into the ground. Two of my mother’s brothers-in-law took part in the Great War. Eastley a chief petty officer naval diver; Will Rowe in the Royal Flying Corps. Two of her brothers Will Pidgeon a sergeant in the Bantam Regiment of the Gloucestershire Regiment having been awarded a Military Medal during the Somme battles; Bert Pidgeon a sergeant in the Royal Flying Corps. My father’s brother George Sanson Deakins a private in the Manchester Regiment was shot in the mouth and convalesced at St Valery sur Somme. Their cousin Walter Shepherd a lieutenant in the Gloucestershire Regiment was not aware until a holiday visit to my grandmother Deakins after the end of the Great War that his wartime sergeant Will Pidgeon was the brother-in-law to his cousin.
