About the book >.>.> Philip Swale the agent and friend of Philip 4th Lord Wharton in the second half of the seventeenth century. Studies already made on a collection of manuscripts of Philip Swale which were lodged in the Library of the Society of Friends in London were extended when that collection was transferred to the North Yorkshire County Record Office at Northallerton and added to the new finds. These are now listed under the title MSS of Richmond Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends (RQR). A search of the vast mass of other contemporary manuscripts now calendared by the Records Office staff soon made a revision of our ideas of the early mining history necessary. Many of the results of this work are included in this book and some are finding their place in an extended study of Philip Swale and Philip Wharton. During the last ten years this research has led to a revision of all previous work on the smelt mills and their history. The preparation of the History of Lead Mining in the Pennines (Longmans 1965) in which Bernard Jennings collaborated necessitated a review and revision of all previous work on that area. The nett effect is that a fuller and clearer account of the history of many of the mines can now be given than was the case in 1955. In view of the new material available it seems logical to extend the story by including the Wensleydale and Stainmore mines. The opportunity is also taken to add a chapter on the long history of coal mining in the area partly because its remains are frequently confused with those of the lead mines and partly because there is no easily available account of this industry which at many points was closely linked with the smelting side of the lead industry. A brief notice is also given to the occasional. (LL)
