About the book >.>.> Above The lifeboat house at Newquay built in 1899-1900 at Towan Head with a committee room above the boathall and close to the steep slipway that had been built in 1875 at the headland. The slip on the western side of Towan Head afforded a deepwater launch within easy reach of the open sea. A small crowd has gathered to watch the launch of the 35ft self-righter James Stevens No.5 (ON.426) which was on station from 1899 to 1917 and saved twenty-six lives. She was the first lifeboat to use this boathouse and was a common subject for postcard publishers of the day who particularly liked images of her hitting the water at the foot of the steep slipway or being recovered onto her carriage on the beach and brought back to Towan Head through the town’s streets.
