About the book >.>.> The second decade of the twentieth century was a time of social change in part hastened by the First World War. Hemel Hempstead was typical of the many small towns to the north of London that became garrison towns overnight. In August 1914 the 2nd London Division of Territorials moved to war stations with its headquarters in the Peahen Hotel St Albans and the various units billeted in the surrounding area. Hemel Hempstead became the home of the Royal Field Artillery with the 5th County of London Brigade based in the High Street the 6th Brigade based in the area round the old Midland railway station the 7th Brigade based at Boxmoor and the 8th Brigade at Apsley. In addition an infantry battalion the Queen’s Westminster Rifles was based at Leverstock Green. This large influx of men and their horses was countered by many of the local men departing on military service. (LL)
