About the book >.>.> The Luttrell Psalter written and illuminated in England early in the 14th century for Sir Geoffrey Luttrell of Irnham in Lincolnshire is one of the most famous manuscripts in the world on account of the numerous scenes of everyday life that mingle with the religious images on its pages. It was first noticed in 1794 by Richard Gough the antiquary who marvelled at the religious legends works of husbandry (and) undescribable display of grotesque objects with an unbounded profusion of ornamental devices that characterise its pages. In 1839 a generous selection of the marginal scenes was engraved for the Society of Antiquaries and these have ever since been drawn upon as illustrations for countless books about the Middle Ages. In spite of its fame the book remained in private hands until 1929 though it had been deposited at the British Museum from 1896. It was then offered for sale and after protracted and difficult negotiations. was purchased for the British nation for 30000 guineas with the aid of a most generous interest-free loan from Mr John Pierpont Morgan the famous American book collector.
