About the book >.>.> About About seven years ago a friend recommended to us a story called “The Maiden Tsar” one of 178 stories collected by Alek- sandr Afanas’ev in Russia and later translated into English by Norbert Guterman. The two of us had earlier begun working to- gether because we each admired the other’s thought and because it seemed right to have both a female voice and a male voice when interpreting these old stories. Two voices felt essential if the two roads taken by the genders were to be brought back in touch with each other. Our way was to announce a workshop and then throw ourselves and the audience into the ocean of the story; once in the ocean we would all have to swim for our lives.
