In 1924 the Pierpont Morgan Library became a public institution. A century after its creation in 2006 the Morgan Library & Museum having undergone a major expansion and renova- tion designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop reopened to wide critical and popular acclaim. The process leading up to that moment is documented in this book which chronicles the 100-year transformation of a rarefied domain to a public museum independent research library musi- cal venue architectural landmark and historic site. This publication includes an assessment by Charles E. Pierce Jr. of Pierpont Morgan’s vision for his personal library and the ways in which his mandate to make its contents widely accessible has been upheld with its transition from a private to public institution as well as through its physical expansion. Brian Regan examines the process of planning the 2006 expansion along with the steps leading to the selection of Renzo Piano as the proj- ect’s architect. In an interview conducted by Cynthia Davidson Piano discusses his personal vision for the transformation of the Morgan within the perspective of his lifelong notions about books and precious objects. Paul Spencer Byard provides a historical interpretation of the factors surrounding the creation of the original library designed by Charles F.
