About the book >.>.> Raised in the late summer of 1940 in Egypt Nos. 50 51 and 52 Middle East Commandos played a unique but largely unsung role in the war in the Middle East. While Nos. 50 and 52 which later amalgamated and took part in the battle for Crete were drawn from Regular and Yeomanry units in Egypt No. 51 was composed in the main of Palestinians both Jews and Arabs. No. 50 could boast of a troop of Spaniards. The story ranges from the North African coast during the British offensive of late 1940/early 1941 from action in Eritrea and Abyssinia to the abortive raid on Castelorizzo (which resulted in a high level inquiry ordered by Churchill) and to the tragic story of Crete which gave way to eventual disbandment. The history of the Middle East Commandos is a mixture of gallantry humour and pathos and strikingly illustrates a grievous misuse of special forces. Supported by the memories of former Middle East Commandos and rare photographs this history is a fascinating one made all the more so by the qualifications of the co-authors. Colonel Young commanded Nos. (LL)
