About the book >.>.> Five years after 2004 the date of the inauguration of its seat in Villa Ghirlanda the Museo di Fotografia Contem- poranea is presenting an exhibition of the new photo- graphic works acquired over the period 2004-09 and is publishing a new catalogue of the collections to coincide with the event. Many steps have been taken and the col- lections have been significantly expanded. But in order to be able to offer here some reflections on the sense of a collection of photographs at the beginning of the third millennium it is necessary to tackle at least two questions first. What photography can be today? And how does it fit into the current historical and cultural situation which is so problematic and hard to define? What can a museum be today and what violent changes have taken place and are taking place in the idea of the museum? We are aware of the fact that in constructing our cul- ture the illusion of knowledge that we are pursuing can only feed on fragments. What we in fact slowly come to understand about history about art about the most diverse fields of knowledge and nourishes our view of the world our culture our very way of being human and what we think life to be is no more than a modest lum- ited handful of bits of knowledge.
