About the book >.>.> Ansel Adams’ role in formulating the essential principles used by photographers today can hardly be overstated considering his contribution of the Zone System and the concept of visualization both now part of the basic vocabulary of the medium. Book 2 enlarges on visualization (considered by Adams to be the crucial element linking the cre ative process with the craft and technique of pho- tography) to include the factors that govern the tonal values of the image as recorded on the neg ative. Thus the creative act of visualizing a pho tograph is linked with the considerations of film exposure and processing chosen by the photog rapher. The early chapters are devoted to a discussion of light film and exposure and their effects on the negative image. This is followed by a detailed discussion of the Zone System presented here in a step-by-step manner that should eliminate much of the confusion that has arisen from the many approaches and interpretations that have been advanced over the years. Control of contrast is fully discussed both in terms of Zone System development control and in relation to the use of filters pre-exposure and other techniques These elements are then brought together in chapters on natural and artificial light in which the many factors are all considered in the context of practical photographic problems. The final chapters contain extensive information on the darkroom and equipment the stages of process- ing and variations that can be introduced to ex- tend the photographer’s control of the medium. The text is amply illustrated with superb pho- tographs from Mr. Adams’ long career including numerous examples he made specifically for this book. Drawings and charts are provided to clarify concepts as needed and additional extensive data is included in a detailed appendix section. (MP)
