About the book >.>.> The subject of this book is the neurocognition of language. Both the functional organiza- tion of the human language system and its neural underpinnings are scrutinized. Our main motivation for putting this book together was triggered by the unprecedented increase in studies on the neural architecture of language functions in the last decade. Due to the rapid development of brain-imaging techniques it is now possible to measure brain activity related to language in action. This contrasts with the past where in the absence of an animal model we had to rely on the experiments of nature in the form of brain lesions that led to language deficits. In this volume we attempt to combine state-of- the-art knowledge about speaking listening and reading with insights into the brain systems involved in these language functions. By reviewing and summarizing our under- standing of the neural architecture of language in relation to its cognitive organization. and by discussing new approaches to bringing neural measures to bear on brain and lan- guage issues we hope that the book will contribute to the advancement of a true cogni- tive neuroscience of language. This book would not have been possible without the help of many friends and col- leagues. First we want to thank a number of colleagues for their contribution to the review process of several chapters in this book: Jos van Berkum. Herb Clark Eve Clark. Peter Indefrey and Dick Stegeman. Second we thank Inge Doehring for her graphical support. Apart from designing the figures for the contributing authors from the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics she transformed all the other figures into a uni- form format thereby contributing substantially to the clarity of presentation and the aes- thetics of the book. Finally we are tremendously grateful to Rian Zondervan without whose secretarial support both our work on this book and that of the OUP staff would have been less joyful and more time consuming. (SP)
