About the book >.>.> Professor Ayer’s new book grew out of the Sir George Watson Lectures which he gave in November 1957 at University College London under the title “Prag-matism and Analysis.” The book is a crit-ical study of Charles Sanders Peirce the founder of American Pragmatism and of Peirce’s better known friend and con-temporary William James. The author deals with their pragmatic theories of meaning and truth with Peirce’s concep-tion of scientific method his theory of knowledge and his highly original theory of signs. Ayer considers James’s theory of the will his account of the development of our concepts of space and time his theory of personal identity and his at-tempt to show that pure experience is the primal stuff out of which everything in the world is composed. Professor Ayer here develops his own ideas on many of the central questions. I have tried to make up my own mind about what Peirce and James were saying and I have also felt free to develop my own theories on some of the main issues which they raise.” British philosophers do not alten com ment on the great figures of American philosophy’s past. Here is one of the most distinguished of their number presenting a full-length study of Pence and James. (SP)
